I’m Running!

I’m doing something that I’ve never done before. Something I never thought I’d do…

On 11th April, I’m doing a 5k run along the River Thames. “Why?!”, I hear you ask.

Well, It’s Male Cancer Week on 9th-15th April, and as well as that, 2018 marks me being in remission from Testicular Cancer for 10 years.

I’m running my 5k for Orchid – the male cancer charity. Orchid is an amazing charity that deals with three male cancers – testicular, prostate and penile (you all just closed your legs, didn’t you?!). Orchid raises money to fund research, runs a hotline for people to call and speak to a nurse, and most importantly, educates men on how to check themselves and increase awareness.

50,000 men a year are diagnosed with one of these three cancers in the UK, but male cancers only get a small fraction of the funding that other cancers get, because as guys, we don’t talk about it.

Cancer, and its treatment afterwards, take a huge strain on your body – both physically and mentally – and it took me a long time to realise how lucky I was to have survived it, when so many people don’t. However, it doesn’t just affect you. It ripples through your family and friends – the very people that hold you up and support you throughout your journey. That’s why I’m using my 10th anniversary remission year to be an advocate for beating male cancers.

So…I’ve set up a JustGiving page at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/stuartpilcher. I’ve set a target of £500 and if you feel inclined, I would be over the moon if you could donate. No donation is too big or too small. Anything that I can raise will go towards beating this indiscriminate and evil disease.

I imagine that I’ll post more in the future about what it was actually like to go through cancer as an 18 year old, but for now, wish me luck, follow my progress, and please, please, donate whatever you can.

If you’ve been touched by cancer or you are going through it, then Orchid has some great links on their site for more help and information. Alternatively, get in touch and I will try and point you in the right direction.

Thank you 😊
